# WooCommerce Profit Calculator: Fees, Costs & ROAS

Work out US WooCommerce profit after the payment gateway, hosting, plugins, shipping and advertising. Choose WooPayments, Stripe or PayPal, then spread your monthly bills over your orders.

**WooCommerce profit per order = retained revenue − item cost − shipping cost − payment gateway fee − overhead and monthly costs per order − return handling − ad spend.** Retained revenue is item price plus shipping charged, reduced by the expected refund rate; sales tax is not revenue but raises the base of the payment gateway fee. Starting values: payment gateway fee: 2.9% + $0.30 on item price, shipping charged and sales tax, presets 2.9% + $0.30, 3.49% + $0.49; ad spend $12.00 per order; overhead $0.00 per order; monthly costs $150.00 across 100 orders, $1.50 per order; no returns assumed.

## Key takeaways

- WooPayments charges 2.9% + $0.30 on US domestic cards and does not return the transaction fee on refunds. Stripe lists 2.9% + $0.30 and PayPal Checkout 3.49% + $0.49.
- Pick the gateway in the fee preset. It changes the fee on every order, and so the profit, break-even [ROAS](https://www.productmetrics.io/glossary/roas) and target ROAS.
- Hosting, plugins and your theme are monthly bills, not per-sale fees. Enter each one with your orders per month and the calculator adds the share to every order.
- $150 of monthly bills across 100 orders adds $1.50 to each order, and across 50 orders $3.00.

## What fees does WooCommerce charge?

WooPayments charges 2.9% plus $0.30 on US domestic cards and does not return the transaction fee when you refund. Stripe publishes 2.9% plus $0.30 for domestic cards, and PayPal Checkout is 3.49% plus $0.49. The free WooCommerce plugin does not make the gateway, hosting or paid extensions free.

| Fee line | Starting preset | Basis and scope | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Payment gateway | 2.9% + $0.30 | US domestic online card payment. Applied to item price, shipping charged and sales tax. International cards and currency conversion cost extra. | [WooPayments fees](https://woocommerce.com/document/woopayments/fees/) |

- [WooPayments fees](https://woocommerce.com/document/woopayments/fees/)
- [Stripe US pricing](https://stripe.com/us/pricing)
- [PayPal US business fees](https://www.paypal.com/us/business/paypal-business-fees)

International cards add 1.50% on WooPayments and currency conversion another 1.00%, and an order with a Stripe Billing subscription payment adds 1.00%. Add those to the percentage when they apply, and do not estimate a buy-now-pay-later checkout with the card rate.

Enter hosting, plugins and your theme as monthly bills, then the orders you expect that month. The calculator divides one by the other and adds the result to overhead, so a quiet month shows what each order really carries. Revisit the order count as the store grows.

_Fees last checked 15 October 2026. Next review due 15 January 2027. Fees change: presets are US examples, so edit them to match your account._

## WooCommerce worked example

A $75 store order carries $28 in product cost and $6 delivery. The $150 of monthly hosting, plugin and theme costs is spread over 100 orders, so each order carries $1.50 before the gateway takes its fee.

_Illustrative data. Starting calculator values, one item per order._

| Step | Calculation |
| --- | --- |
| Order revenue before returns | $75.00 + $0.00 = $75.00 |
| Payment gateway | $2.48 |
| Total fees | $2.48 |
| Retained revenue | $75.00 × (1 − 0%) = $75.00 |
| Contribution before ads | $75.00 − $28.00 COGS − $6.00 delivery − $2.48 fees − $0.00 overhead − $1.50 monthly costs per order − $0.00 return handling = $37.02 |
| Profit after ads | $37.02 − $12.00 = $25.02 |
| Profit margin | $25.02 ÷ $75.00 = 33.4% |
| Net markup on COGS | $25.02 ÷ $28.00 = 89.4% |
| Max break-even ad spend | $37.02 |
| Break-even ROAS | $75.00 ÷ $37.02 = 2.03 |
| Target ROAS for 15% retained margin | 291% |

At $75.00 you keep $25.02 per sale (33.4% margin). You can spend at most $37.02 on ads per order before losing money (break-even ROAS 2.03).

## How does the payment gateway change WooCommerce profit?

WooCommerce charges no platform fee, so the gateway is the one percentage that comes off every order. On the starting order of $75.00, the presets below range from $2.48 to $3.11 in payment fees. Pick the preset in the fee editor above; each one changes the profit, the break-even ROAS and the target ROAS.

| Gateway | Rate | Fee on this order | Profit after ads | Break-even ROAS | Source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| WooPayments | 2.9% + $0.30 | $2.48 | $25.02 | 2.03 | [WooPayments fees](https://woocommerce.com/document/woopayments/fees/) |
| Stripe | 2.9% + $0.30 | $2.48 | $25.02 | 2.03 | [Stripe US pricing](https://stripe.com/us/pricing) |
| PayPal Checkout | 3.49% + $0.49 | $3.11 | $24.39 | 2.06 | [PayPal US business fees](https://www.paypal.com/us/business/paypal-business-fees) |

_Illustrative data. Computed from the starting calculator values with the same model._

_Presets are US domestic card rates. WooPayments adds 1.50% for international cards and 1.00% for currency conversion, and 1.00% on orders with a Stripe Billing subscription payment. Add those to the percentage when they apply._

## How do hosting, plugins and theme costs change profit per order?

Hosting, plugins and your theme are monthly bills, not per-sale fees. Enter each one in the monthly costs block above, with the orders you expect that month. The calculator divides the total by the orders and adds the result to overhead.

At the starting values, $150.00 of monthly costs across 100 orders adds $1.50 to each order. Fewer orders spread the same bills over less revenue.

| Orders per month | Monthly costs per order | Profit per order after ads | Break-even ROAS | Monthly profit after ads |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 25 orders | $6.00 | $20.52 | 2.31 | $513.00 |
| 50 orders | $3.00 | $23.52 | 2.11 | $1,176.00 |
| 100 orders | $1.50 | $25.02 | 2.03 | $2,502.00 |
| 250 orders | $0.60 | $25.92 | 1.98 | $6,480.00 |
| 500 orders | $0.30 | $26.22 | 1.96 | $13,110.00 |

_Illustrative data. Computed from the starting calculator values with the same model._

## Mistakes to avoid when calculating WooCommerce profit

| Mistake | What it does to profit | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Assuming a self-hosted store has no running costs | Hosting and extensions make orders look more profitable than they are. | Enter the monthly bills and a realistic order count; the calculator spreads them over each order. |
| Using the WooPayments rate for another gateway | The fee line is wrong from the first order. | Choose the Stripe or PayPal Checkout preset, or enter your provider’s own rate. |
| Counting refunded orders as fully recovered | The transaction fee is not returned on a refund, and the product and postage costs stay. | Enter a returns rate and a handling cost per return. |

## ROAS, POAS and WooCommerce fees

A WooCommerce store has no marketplace taking a percentage, which makes a revenue ROAS target feel safe. The costs sit elsewhere, in the gateway, hosting, extensions and shipping. [POAS](https://www.productmetrics.io/glossary/poas) divides contribution before ads by ad spend: a POAS of 1 covers the ads and leaves nothing over.

## How this calculator works

US dollars, one item per order. Selling price and shipping charged exclude sales tax. Tax only increases the basis of fee lines marked payment; it never becomes seller revenue. Fee lines are rounded half up to whole cents before summing. All fee presets are editable estimates, not a settlement quote.

Retained revenue = (selling price + shipping charged) × (1 − returns % − chargebacks %). The returns scenario retains all original [COGS](https://www.productmetrics.io/glossary/cost-of-goods-sold), fees and outbound shipping, and adds handling cost × returns %. It assumes no recovered stock value and no refunded fees, unless a page lets you enter a supplier recovery share. Use zero returns for the ordinary completed-order calculation.

Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − total fees − overhead − return handling − ads. Profit margin = profit ÷ retained revenue. Net markup = profit ÷ item COGS. This is profit after entered costs, before unallocated business costs and income taxes.

Maximum break-even ad spend = contribution before ads. Break-even ROAS = original item and shipping revenue ÷ contribution before ads, shown as a plain number. Target ROAS = original revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), shown as a percentage. A zero or negative budget has no feasible ROAS. Pre-return advertising revenue sets the ROAS basis and retained revenue sets the margin basis: match the revenue basis to your advertising reports.

Pages with extra inputs add them to the same sum. Monthly costs are divided by orders per month and added to overhead. Supplier recovery adds back that share of the item cost on returned orders. A chargeback removes the sale, adds the dispute fee and recovers nothing.

- Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − fees − overhead − return handling − ads.
- Break-even ROAS = order revenue ÷ contribution before ads, as a plain number.
- Target ROAS = order revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), as a percentage.

Starting values on this page: selling price $75.00, shipping charged $0.00, sales tax $0.00; item cost $28.00, shipping cost $6.00, overhead $0.00 per order, ad spend $12.00 per order; 0% of orders returned with $0.00 handling each; monthly costs hosting $80.00 + plugins and extensions $50.00 + theme and design $20.00 = $150.00 across 100 orders a month; payment gateway fee: 2.9% + $0.30 on item price, shipping charged and sales tax, presets 2.9% + $0.30, 3.49% + $0.49; desired profit margin 15%.

Not modelled: international cards, currency conversion and subscription surcharges (add them to the rate), buy-now-pay-later methods, extensions priced per sale, other gateways beyond the three presets and sales tax remittance.

## WooCommerce fee and profit questions

### Does WooCommerce charge a transaction fee?

The WooCommerce plugin itself charges none; the payment gateway does. This calculator starts with WooPayments at 2.9% plus $0.30 on US domestic cards. Hosting, extensions and your theme are monthly costs, so enter them in the monthly costs block instead of treating them as a per-sale fee.

### Can I use a different WooCommerce payment gateway?

Yes. Choose Stripe or PayPal Checkout in the fee preset, or enter any provider’s percentage and fixed amount. If a payment method adds an extra charge, such as international cards or currency conversion, include it in the rate and check which parts of the order the provider’s fee covers.

### How do hosting costs change WooCommerce profit?

Divide the monthly hosting, plugin and theme bill by the orders you complete. A $150 bill across 100 orders is $1.50 each, and across 50 orders it is $3.00. Use a cautious order count if seasonality leaves the store quiet for part of the year.

### What is a good WooCommerce margin for Google Shopping?

The useful margin is what remains after fulfilment, processing, returns and acquisition, with enough retained to cover other bills. Set a desired margin and compare the resulting target ROAS with the product’s observed advertising performance instead of copying a margin from another store.

### Are refunds free with WooPayments?

No. WooPayments does not return the transaction fee when you refund an order. The returns field here reduces expected revenue while keeping the original product, shipping and fee costs. Add a handling cost per return for a conservative scenario, and reconcile actual refunds against your payment reports.

### Are these WooCommerce fees current for 2026?

The linked official sources were checked on 15 October 2026; the next review is due 15 January 2027. Fees can change during the year. Confirm your category, account and order-specific charges before relying on any preset.
