# Google Shopping ads work product by product. Manage each one against its own break-even.

Google Shopping ads show your products with a photo, title and price from your Merchant Center feed, and every product needs a different return to pay for its clicks.

## Google Shopping ads turn your product feed into ads. Shoppers see the photo, title, price and store name before they click.

- [About Shopping ads (Google Ads Help)](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/2454022)

### Your feed

Shopping ads use the product data in your Merchant Center account, not keywords. Link Merchant Center to Google Ads and add your products to the feed.

### Your campaign

A Shopping or Performance Max campaign advertises those products. Standard Shopping bills per click: you pay when someone clicks the ad.

### The shopper

Standard Shopping runs on the Shopping tab, Google Search and Google Images. Performance Max reaches more channels, including YouTube, Gmail and Maps.

## Google Shopping campaign management starts with the feed. Then you manage products in groups, not as one average.

### Fix the feed first

Your ad performance is tightly linked to your Merchant Center product data. Google’s product data tips come down to three points.

- **Titles.** Put the key details at the front of the title, such as brand, size and colour.
- **Price and availability.** Keep both up to date, including tax and shipping.
- **Identifiers.** Use a unique ID for every product, and add the GTIN whenever you have one.

### Manage product groups, not one average

Google Shopping ads management happens at product level. The Product groups page in Google Ads is the first place to check how your product groups perform.

A target ROAS is an average return across the products in a campaign, so one target cannot show which products earn it and which do not. Set targets per product, or per group of similar products.

- [Monitor and optimise your Shopping campaigns (Google Ads Help)](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3455573)

## Google Shopping optimisation works one product at a time. Break-even sets the target, segments set the priority, budget sets the reach.

### Break-even ROAS per product

Break-even ROAS is 1 ÷ contribution margin: a 30% margin breaks even at a ROAS of 3.33, a 50% margin at 2. Check every product against its own number.

- [Break-even ROAS calculator](https://www.productmetrics.io/break-even-roas-calculator)

### Six segments by clicks and return

Segment products by advertising clicks and return against your target. Each segment gets a different priority, so one target no longer covers every product.

- [Performance Max](https://www.productmetrics.io/performance-max)

### Budget per product

Spread across 500 products, €20 a day averages €0.04 each. A small budget cannot test every product, so give it to the products with the most clicks and a return above their break-even.

## A tool helps once you have more products than you can review. Product Segmentation does one job: it segments them.

Google Shopping optimisation software earns its place when you cannot read every product by hand. Product Segmentation uses Product Metrics ML to segment your products into six segments by advertising clicks and return, recalculated daily. Return is ROAS, or POAS once you connect margins.

Each segment is written to a Merchant Center custom label. You split your campaigns or asset groups on that label and choose the targets and budgets yourself: Product Metrics reads your data and writes only the labels you approve. It is not an attribution tool.

With a few dozen products, Google’s Product groups page and a spreadsheet can be enough.

## Google Shopping best practices come down to seven checks. Each one links to the tool or guide behind it.

### Keep the feed accurate

Titles, price, availability and identifiers drive every ad, so check them before you change a target.

- [Product data tips (Merchant Center Help)](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7380908)

### Know each product’s break-even ROAS

Use 1 ÷ contribution margin for every product, not one number for the whole shop.

- [Break-even ROAS per product](https://www.productmetrics.io/blog/break-even-roas-per-product)

### Set targets from break-even

Google offers Target ROAS and Maximise conversion value. A target below a product’s break-even loses money on that product.

- [Set a target ROAS from your margin](https://www.productmetrics.io/blog/target-roas-from-margin)

### Segment products by clicks and return

Stars, Dogs and Drainers need different priorities, not one shared target.

- [Performance Max for ecommerce](https://www.productmetrics.io/blog/performance-max-for-ecommerce)

### Spend the budget where products earn

€20 a day over 500 products is €0.04 each. Start with the products that have clicks and a return above break-even.

- [Google Ads budget calculator](https://www.productmetrics.io/google-ads-budget-calculator)
- [Optimise Google Shopping ads](https://www.productmetrics.io/blog/optimize-google-shopping-ads)

### Review by product group

A campaign total hides which products earn. The Product groups page shows how each group performs.

- [Monitor and optimise your Shopping campaigns (Google Ads Help)](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3455573)

### Count every conversion

Missed conversions lower the ROAS you see. Test which ad blockers stop your tags.

## Google Shopping ads, answered.

### Do Google Shopping ads actually work?

They can, but they work product by product. Shoppers see the photo, title and price before they click, and whether a click pays depends on each product’s return against its own break-even ROAS. Some products earn more than they cost and others do not, so measure each product rather than the whole campaign.

### How much do Google Shopping ads cost?

There is no fixed price. You choose a daily budget and, in standard Shopping, you pay per click. An auction runs every time someone searches, so what a click costs differs by product, category and competition. Your spend is clicks times average cost per click.

### What is the best bidding strategy for Google Shopping ads?

Google offers Maximise clicks, Target ROAS and Maximise conversion value for Shopping campaigns. For profit, set the target ROAS from your margin: 1 ÷ contribution margin is the break-even ROAS, and a target below it loses money. Because products have different margins, work out break-even per product and split campaigns by product group.

### How do I set up a Google Shopping campaign?

You need a Google Ads account, a Merchant Center account linked to it, and your products in the Merchant Center feed. Then create a Shopping campaign in Google Ads and choose the Merchant Center account with the products you want to advertise. Google’s guide, Create a Shopping campaign, covers each setting.

### Is €20 a day enough for Google Shopping ads?

It depends on how many products share the budget and what a click costs you. Across 500 products, €20 a day averages €0.04 each, which is too little to test them all. Put it on the products with the most clicks and a return above break-even; segments show you which those are.
