## A browser tag or Product Metrics on Shopify. What reaches Google Ads and Meta.

A browser tag and Product Metrics on Shopify compared:

| What counts | A browser tag / GTM | Product Metrics on Shopify |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Ad blockers | ✗ Blocked, also behind Google tag gateway or server-side GTM | ✓ Gets through every ad blocker |
| Safari ITP | — Tags load, cookies cut to 7 days | ✓ First-party cookie lasts 30 days |
| Where it runs | — In the visitor’s browser | ✓ Server-side, from your own store domain |
| Purchases | — As the browser reports them | ✓ Confirmed from the Shopify order; refunds adjust |
| Profit | — Order value only | ✓ From the cost per item you keep in Shopify, and Shopify Payments fees |
| New customers | — Not marked by default | ✓ Marked new or returning, with lifetime value |
| POAS bidding | ✗ Not without profit in the conversion | ✓ On Google Ads and Meta |

## What it adds to your Shopify store. Profit, every purchase, new customers.

- **Bid on profit with POAS.** Each order reaches Google Ads and Meta with its profit, so both can bid on POAS. It works on ROAS right away; connect margins to switch to POAS.
- **Every purchase counts.** Full Signal Tracking gets through every ad blocker. It runs on a unique endpoint on your own domain that auto-rotates if it is ever blocked.
- **Win new customers.** Each purchase is marked new or returning, with its lifetime value, so Google Ads and Meta can tell first orders apart and bid for new customers.

## Same ROAS, different profit. POAS shows which product pays.

POAS = ROAS × contribution margin %. At a POAS of 1 a product breaks even; above 1 it earns more than its ads cost.

| Product | ROAS | Contribution margin | POAS | After €100 of ads |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Product A | 4 | 40% | 1.6 | Earns €60 |
| Product B | 4 | 20% | 0.8 | Loses €20 |

## How it runs on Shopify. What runs where.

Product Metrics on Shopify:

| | Shopify |
| --- | --- |
| Install | Shopify App Store app with a theme app embed and a checkout Web Pixel |
| Tracking endpoint | Shopify app proxy under /apps/ on your store domain |
| Consent | Shopify Customer Privacy, mapped to Consent Mode v2 |
| Orders and refunds | Paid, cancelled and refunded webhooks, then a read through the Shopify Admin API |
| Cost price | Cost per item on each Shopify order line; Shopify Payments fees as charged |
| New customers | The customer’s earlier paid orders in Shopify |
| Versions | Shopify Admin API 2026-07; checkout tracking through Web Pixels |

### Your endpoint runs on your store domain. Checkout runs through a Web Pixel.

The app embed loads Product Metrics through Shopify’s app proxy, under /apps/ on your own store domain. An adblocker sees a request to your shop, not to a tracking domain.

Shopify now runs checkout tracking through Web Pixels: scripts in Additional scripts and script tags no longer run on the thank-you and order status pages (Shopify Plus since 28 August 2025, other plans since 26 August 2026). The Product Metrics Web Pixel reports the checkout contact and the completed purchase from inside Shopify’s checkout.

### Consent comes from Shopify Customer Privacy. Passed on as Consent Mode v2.

Product Metrics reads the visitor’s analytics and marketing choices from Shopify’s Customer Privacy API and passes them to Google Ads as Consent Mode v2 signals. Nothing is granted by default.

The email address is hashed before it is sent, and only when the visitor allowed marketing.

### Orders come from Shopify, not from the browser. Refunds and cancellations follow.

When Shopify marks an order paid, cancelled or refunded, it sends a webhook. Product Metrics then reads the order through the Shopify Admin API: totals, discounts, shipping, tax, refunds and the customer. That read is what reaches Google Ads and Meta, so each purchase counts with the amount Shopify recorded.

A refund or cancellation becomes an adjustment to the same order. The Shopify order ID is sent as the transaction ID, so repeated reports of the order are deduplicated within the same Google Ads conversion action.

### Shopify COGS becomes profit per order. From the cost per item you already keep.

Shopify keeps a cost per item on each product variant. Product Metrics reads it on every order line. Shopify Payments fees are read as charged; shipping, packing and other costs come from your cost settings. Lines without a Shopify cost use the cost in Merchant Center.

Product Segmentation works on ROAS straight away. Connect margins to switch it to POAS.

### New customers are marked before Google Ads and Meta see them. With profit and lifetime value.

Product Metrics checks the customer’s earlier paid orders in Shopify. The first paid order makes a new customer; every later one is returning.

Each purchase reaches Google Ads and Meta marked new or returning, with its revenue, profit and lifetime value. In Google Ads, that is eight conversion actions Product Metrics creates and manages for you:

- Product Metrics - New Customer
- New Customer Profit
- Returning Customer
- Returning Customer Profit
- Revenue
- Profit
- Revenue LTV
- Profit LTV

Product Metrics shows nCAC, what you pay for a new customer, per product and as an average, so you can increase priority on products that bring in first orders.

### Shopify and Google Ads: what each app does. Keep your feed, add the signal.

Shopify’s Google & YouTube app connects your store to Google Merchant Center and lists your products for Shopping ads. Keep it: Product Metrics is not a feed tool.

Product Metrics adds what Google Ads bids on and what you act on: every Shopify purchase sent server-side as new or returning with its profit, and your products segmented by clicks and return into Merchant Center labels that your Shopping and Performance Max campaigns use.

### Google Ads conversion tracking on Shopify. Confirmed from the order, sent from our server.

The usual setup tracks the purchase in the visitor’s browser. Adblockers stop part of it, and Google Ads bids on what is left.

Product Metrics confirms each purchase from the Shopify order and sends it from our server to Google Ads, with Enhanced Conversions and Consent Mode v2. It runs next to your current tag.

### Requirements and limits. What to check before you install.

- A theme where you can turn on the Product Metrics app embed.
- A Google Ads account; Merchant Center for Shopping and Performance Max.
- Cost per item filled in on your products, for profit without estimates.
- Product Metrics reads an order again when it is paid, cancelled or refunded; other edits after payment don’t trigger a new read.
- Orders without a customer record are sent without a new or returning mark.

## Questions about Shopify. Short answers.

### Does it send Shopify orders to Meta too?

Yes. Full Signal Tracking sends revenue, profit, new and returning customers and lifetime value to Google Ads and Meta, so POAS bidding works on both.

### Do I need margin data to start?

No. It works on ROAS right away; connect margins to switch to POAS. Full Signal Tracking is included in the Pro subscription.

### Is Product Metrics a Shopify GA4 integration?

No. Product Metrics sends conversions to Google Ads and Meta, not to Google Analytics 4. Keep Shopify’s own Google Analytics connection for analytics; Product Metrics doesn’t change it.

### Does it replace the Google & YouTube app for Google Shopping?

No. Keep the Google & YouTube app, or your feed app, for your products in Merchant Center. Product Metrics adds server-side purchases, new-customer and profit conversions, and product segments as Merchant Center labels.

### Will Google Ads count orders twice next to my current tag?

The Shopify order ID is sent as the transaction ID. Google Ads deduplicates matching IDs within the same conversion action. If your existing tag uses a separate purchase action, choose which purchase action is primary for bidding and keep the other secondary; the ID alone does not deduplicate across actions.

### Where does the profit come from?

From the cost per item in Shopify on each order line, Shopify Payments fees as charged, and your own cost settings for shipping and handling.

### Is there a Shopify profit calculator?

For a quick number, the free break-even ROAS calculator works out the return a product needs from its price and costs. Inside Product Metrics, profit comes from your Shopify costs on every order.

### Is Product Metrics an attribution tool?

No. It sends every confirmed purchase to Google Ads and Meta, with consent, so their bidding learns from all of them. It doesn’t share credit across channels.

### Does it get through adblockers?

Yes. Full Signal Tracking runs on a unique endpoint on your own domain, and if that endpoint is ever blocked, it auto-rotates to a fresh one. Consent still decides what is sent.
