Example

One campaign, different product economics
ProductROASBreak-even ROAS
Product A42
Product B45

Both products report the same revenue return, but only A covers its included costs and advertising. Illustrative data.

Put it into practice

For one product, and for an account

For retail campaigns, Merchant Center product data supports product advertising. A campaign-level total combines products with different costs, stock positions and returns. Inspect product performance alongside those business differences.

Use listing groups within Performance Max asset groups to include or exclude products by attributes such as custom labels. Standard Shopping uses product groups. A label helps you express a grouping; it does not guarantee exposure, a particular channel allocation or profitable results for each product.

Common mistake

Reading campaign ROAS as proof that every advertised product is profitable. Revenue return must be compared with the costs and contribution margin of each product.

Questions

Is Performance Max only Shopping?

No. Performance Max is a goal-based Google Ads campaign type that reaches customers across Google advertising channels, not only Shopping. For retail, it uses your Merchant Center product data as part of the setup, so your products can be advertised alongside the other channels in a single campaign.

Does a target ROAS guarantee product profitability?

No. Target ROAS is an average conversion-value target for the campaign, and Google Ads aims for it rather than guaranteeing it. Individual products can still return less than their own break-even ROAS while the campaign meets its target, so check product-level returns against each product’s margin.
