Key takeaways
Amazon profit per order = retained revenue − item cost − shipping cost − referral fee − FBA fulfilment fee − storage and inbound allocation − overhead − return handling − ad spend. Retained revenue is item price plus shipping charged, reduced by the expected refund rate; sales tax is not revenue and is not in any fee base here. Starting values: referral fee: 15% on item price and shipping charged, minimum $0.30, presets 15%, 8%; FBA fulfilment fee: your amount (starts at $0.00); storage and inbound allocation: your amount (starts at $0.00); ad spend $8.00 per order; overhead $1.00 per order; no returns assumed.
- Referral fee presets are Home and Kitchen 15% and Consumer Electronics 8%, both with a $0.30 minimum. Other categories differ.
- FBA fulfilment and storage start at $0.00 because they depend on your product’s size, weight and price. Enter your quote from Amazon’s FBA costs page or Revenue Calculator.
- Until you enter those two amounts, the profit shown is before FBA costs and too high.
- ACOS is the inverse of ROAS: a 25% ACOS is a ROAS of 4.
What fees does Amazon charge?
Referral and fulfilment fees are separate deductions. Home and Kitchen uses a 15% referral fee with a $0.30 minimum; Consumer Electronics has an 8% preset. Amazon’s category classifications and exceptions matter, so verify the actual listing category rather than its marketing description.
| Fee line | Starting preset | Basis and scope | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | 15% | Home and Kitchen preset: 15%, minimum $0.30. Other categories vary. | Amazon selling fees |
| FBA fulfilment fee (your quote) | Your amount (starts at $0.00) | Starts at $0.00: Amazon’s FBA fee depends on your product’s price, dimensions and shipping weight. Enter your quote from the FBA costs page or the Revenue Calculator, including surcharges. | Amazon FBA costs |
| Storage and inbound allocation (your amount) | Your amount (starts at $0.00) | Starts at $0.00. Allocate your storage, inbound transport, placement and other charges per unit sold. | Amazon FBA costs |
This is a profit calculator with editable FBA inputs, not a complete FBA size-tier rate engine, and it ships no FBA fee amounts. Get your current quote from Amazon’s Revenue Calculator using packaged dimensions, shipping weight, price and category. Include applicable surcharges in that quote; a generic weight-only rate can miss them.
Storage is time- and volume-dependent. Spread monthly storage, inbound transport and placement charges over expected units sold, then include removal or returns costs where relevant. For merchant fulfilment, set the FBA quote and storage allocation to zero and enter your own delivery costs.
Fees last checked 15 October 2026. Next review due 15 January 2027. Fees change: presets are US examples, so edit them to match your account.
Amazon worked example
A $40 Home and Kitchen product costs $12 landed, with $1 other overhead and $8 advertising. FBA fulfilment and storage are left at $0.00 because Amazon prices them by product, so this result is before FBA costs. Enter your own quote before you use it for a decision.
Illustrative data. Starting calculator values, one item per order.
- Order revenue before returns
- $40.00 + $0.00 = $40.00
- Referral fee
- $6.00
- FBA fulfilment fee (your quote)
- $0.00
- Storage and inbound allocation (your amount)
- $0.00
- Total fees
- $6.00
- Retained revenue
- $40.00 × (1 − 0%) = $40.00
- Contribution before ads
- $40.00 − $12.00 COGS − $0.00 delivery − $6.00 fees − $1.00 overhead − $0.00 return handling = $21.00
- Profit after ads
- $21.00 − $8.00 = $13.00
- Profit margin
- $13.00 ÷ $40.00 = 32.5%
- Net markup on COGS
- $13.00 ÷ $12.00 = 108.3%
- Max break-even ad spend
- $21.00
- Break-even ROAS
- $40.00 ÷ $21.00 = 1.9
- Target ROAS for 15% retained margin
- 267%
At $40.00 you keep $13.00 per sale (32.5% margin). You can spend at most $21.00 on ads per order before losing money (break-even ROAS 1.9).
Example only, not an Amazon fee: if your FBA fulfilment quote were $5.00 per unit, profit would be $8.00 (20.0% margin) and break-even ROAS would be 2.5.
Mistakes to avoid when calculating Amazon profit
| Mistake | What it does to profit | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving FBA fulfilment at $0.00 | Profit is overstated by the whole fulfilment fee. | Enter the quote from Amazon’s Revenue Calculator for your product. |
| Using one category’s referral rate for every product | The rate and the minimum fee differ by category. | Check the category on Amazon’s selling fees page and edit the percentage. |
| Adding both the monthly plan and the per-item fee | Overhead is counted twice. The Individual plan charges per item, the Professional plan monthly. | Enter only the plan you are on. |
ROAS, POAS and Amazon fees
Amazon reports ACOS, which is ad spend over attributed sales. It ignores the referral fee, FBA fulfilment and storage, so a healthy-looking ACOS can still lose money on a product. POAS divides contribution before ads by ad spend: a POAS of 1 covers the ads and leaves nothing over.
How this calculator works
US dollars, one item per order. Selling price and shipping charged exclude sales tax. Tax only increases the basis of fee lines marked payment; it never becomes seller revenue. Fee lines are rounded half up to whole cents before summing. All fee presets are editable estimates, not a settlement quote.
Retained revenue = (selling price + shipping charged) × (1 − returns % − chargebacks %). The returns scenario retains all original COGS, fees and outbound shipping, and adds handling cost × returns %. It assumes no recovered stock value and no refunded fees, unless a page lets you enter a supplier recovery share. Use zero returns for the ordinary completed-order calculation.
Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − total fees − overhead − return handling − ads. Profit margin = profit ÷ retained revenue. Net markup = profit ÷ item COGS. This is profit after entered costs, before unallocated business costs and income taxes.
Maximum break-even ad spend = contribution before ads. Break-even ROAS = original item and shipping revenue ÷ contribution before ads, shown as a plain number. Target ROAS = original revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), shown as a percentage. A zero or negative budget has no feasible ROAS. Pre-return advertising revenue sets the ROAS basis and retained revenue sets the margin basis: match the revenue basis to your advertising reports.
Pages with extra inputs add them to the same sum. Monthly costs are divided by orders per month and added to overhead. Supplier recovery adds back that share of the item cost on returned orders. A chargeback removes the sale, adds the dispute fee and recovers nothing.
- Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − fees − overhead − return handling − ads.
- Break-even ROAS = order revenue ÷ contribution before ads, as a plain number.
- Target ROAS = order revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), as a percentage.
Starting values on this page: selling price $40.00, shipping charged $0.00, sales tax $0.00; item cost $12.00, shipping cost $0.00, overhead $1.00 per order, ad spend $8.00 per order; 0% of orders returned with $0.00 handling each; referral fee: 15% on item price and shipping charged, minimum $0.30, presets 15%, 8%; FBA fulfilment fee: your amount (starts at $0.00); storage and inbound allocation: your amount (starts at $0.00); desired profit margin 15%.
This is not an FBA fee engine: it has no size-tier table, surcharges, long-term storage, removal or returns processing fees. Use your own quote.
