Key takeaways
Etsy profit per order = retained revenue − item cost − shipping cost − transaction fee − Etsy Payments fee − listing fee − Offsite Ads fee (if enabled) − overhead − return handling − ad spend. Retained revenue is item price plus shipping charged, reduced by the expected refund rate; sales tax is not revenue but raises the base of the Etsy Payments fee. Starting values: transaction fee: 6.5% on item price and shipping charged; Etsy Payments fee: 3% + $0.25 on item price, shipping charged and sales tax; listing fee: $0.20; Offsite Ads fee: 15% on item price and shipping charged, capped at $100.00 per order, presets 15%, 12%, off by default; ad spend $5.00 per order; overhead $0.00 per order; no returns assumed.
- Etsy charges 6.5% on item price plus shipping, 3% + $0.25 for Etsy Payments in the US, and $0.20 per listing.
- Etsy Payments is charged on the order including sales tax and shipping. The transaction fee leaves US sales tax out.
- Offsite Ads costs 15% on an attributed order until your shop has $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days. From the first day of the following month it is 12% for the lifetime of the shop, and participation is required. The fee is capped at $100 per order.
- Charging the buyer for postage does not cancel your label cost, and fees still apply to the postage you charged.
What fees does Etsy charge?
A listing charge and a transaction charge solve different problems: the first pays for listing or renewal, the second follows a sale. The one-item model allocates one $0.20 listing fee. Allocate unsold listings and extra renewals through overhead if you want to recover them from completed sales.
| Fee line | Starting preset | Basis and scope | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | Item price plus shipping charged; US sales tax excluded. | Etsy fees policy |
| Etsy Payments | 3% + $0.25 | US bank account: includes sales tax and shipping in the processing basis. | Etsy Payments policy |
| Listing fee | $0.20 | One listing or renewal allocated to this one-item order. | Etsy fees policy |
| Offsite Ads | 15% (off initially) | Attributed orders only, on item price plus shipping, not sales tax. 15% until the shop has $10,000 in sales over the prior 365 days, then 12% for the lifetime of the shop. Capped at $100 per order. | Etsy fees policy |
For US sellers, the transaction percentage covers the item and shipping charged. Etsy Payments uses the order including sales tax. Enter tax separately so its processing cost appears without treating money remitted to the state as seller revenue.
Offsite Ads is charged only on an order Etsy attributes to its off-Etsy ads (a click within 30 days). On the first day of each month Etsy looks at your sales over the prior 365 days, leaving out separately charged shipping, taxes and gift wrap. Under $10,000 the fee is 15% and you can opt out. From the first day of the month after you reach $10,000 it is 12%, it stays at 12% for the lifetime of the shop, and participation is required. The fee is charged on item price plus shipping, not on US sales tax, and capped at $100 per order. The toggle models one attributed order; it does not decide whether you can opt out.

Etsy worked example
A handmade pouch sells for $35, with $4 charged for shipping, $9 of materials and labour included in COGS, and $5 postage. Offsite Ads is off in the starting example; the table below shows what one attributed order costs at 15% and at 12%.
Illustrative data. Starting calculator values, one item per order.
- Order revenue before returns
- $35.00 + $4.00 = $39.00
- Transaction fee
- $2.54
- Etsy Payments
- $1.42
- Listing fee
- $0.20
- Offsite Ads
- $0.00
- Total fees
- $4.16
- Retained revenue
- $39.00 × (1 − 0%) = $39.00
- Contribution before ads
- $39.00 − $9.00 COGS − $5.00 delivery − $4.16 fees − $0.00 overhead − $0.00 return handling = $20.84
- Profit after ads
- $20.84 − $5.00 = $15.84
- Profit margin
- $15.84 ÷ $39.00 = 40.6%
- Net markup on COGS
- $15.84 ÷ $9.00 = 176.0%
- Max break-even ad spend
- $20.84
- Break-even ROAS
- $39.00 ÷ $20.84 = 1.87
- Target ROAS for 15% retained margin
- 260%
At $35.00 you keep $15.84 per sale (40.6% margin). You can spend at most $20.84 on ads per order before losing money (break-even ROAS 1.87).
What does an Offsite Ads order cost on Etsy?
Offsite Ads is a charge on orders that Etsy attributes to its off-Etsy ads, not on every order. Compare the same order with the charge off, at the 15% rate and at the 12% rate to see how much profit one attributed order gives up.
| Scenario | Total fees | Profit after ads | Break-even ROAS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offsite Ads off (no attributed order) | $4.16 | $15.84 | 1.87 |
| Attributed order, not yet qualified: 15% | $10.01 | $9.99 | 2.6 |
| Attributed order, qualified: 12% | $8.84 | $11.16 | 2.41 |

Mistakes to avoid when calculating Etsy profit
| Mistake | What it does to profit | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ignoring fees on shipping charged | Etsy fees apply to the postage the buyer pays, so profit looks higher than it is. | Enter shipping charged and your label cost as separate lines. |
| Treating Offsite Ads as a charge on every order | An attributed order can lose 15% of its value, while other orders lose nothing. | Run one scenario with the toggle on and one with it off. |
| Leaving your own time out | A handmade item can look profitable only because the labour is free. | Add production labour to item cost before you set a margin target. |
ROAS, POAS and Etsy fees
Etsy takes its share of price and postage before you pay for a single click, and Offsite Ads can take another 15% of an order. A ROAS target that ignores that share overstates what you can spend. POAS divides contribution before ads by ad spend: a POAS of 1 covers the ads and leaves nothing over.
How this calculator works
US dollars, one item per order. Selling price and shipping charged exclude sales tax. Tax only increases the basis of fee lines marked payment; it never becomes seller revenue. Fee lines are rounded half up to whole cents before summing. All fee presets are editable estimates, not a settlement quote.
Retained revenue = (selling price + shipping charged) × (1 − returns % − chargebacks %). The returns scenario retains all original COGS, fees and outbound shipping, and adds handling cost × returns %. It assumes no recovered stock value and no refunded fees, unless a page lets you enter a supplier recovery share. Use zero returns for the ordinary completed-order calculation.
Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − total fees − overhead − return handling − ads. Profit margin = profit ÷ retained revenue. Net markup = profit ÷ item COGS. This is profit after entered costs, before unallocated business costs and income taxes.
Maximum break-even ad spend = contribution before ads. Break-even ROAS = original item and shipping revenue ÷ contribution before ads, shown as a plain number. Target ROAS = original revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), shown as a percentage. A zero or negative budget has no feasible ROAS. Pre-return advertising revenue sets the ROAS basis and retained revenue sets the margin basis: match the revenue basis to your advertising reports.
Pages with extra inputs add them to the same sum. Monthly costs are divided by orders per month and added to overhead. Supplier recovery adds back that share of the item cost on returned orders. A chargeback removes the sale, adds the dispute fee and recovers nothing.
- Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − fees − overhead − return handling − ads.
- Break-even ROAS = order revenue ÷ contribution before ads, as a plain number.
- Target ROAS = order revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), as a percentage.
