Key takeaways
eBay profit per order = retained revenue − item cost − shipping cost − final value fee − per-order fee − Promoted Listings General charge (if enabled) − overhead − return handling − ad spend. Retained revenue is item price plus shipping charged, reduced by the expected refund rate; sales tax is not revenue but raises the base of the final value fee and Promoted Listings General charge. Starting values: final value fee: 13.6% on item price, shipping charged and sales tax, then 2.35% above $7,500.00, presets 13.6%, 15.3%, 13.25%; per-order fee: $0.30 up to $10.00, $0.40 above; Promoted Listings General charge: 2% on item price, shipping charged and sales tax, off by default; ad spend $5.00 per order; overhead $0.00 per order; no returns assumed.
- Most categories pay 13.6% up to $7,500 and 2.35% above it. Books, magazines, movies and music pay 15.3%, and eligible coins and trading cards 13.25%.
- The fee basis includes buyer-paid shipping and sales tax, so the fee is higher than the percentage of the item price alone.
- Payment processing is inside the final value fee. Do not add a separate card fee.
- Promoted Listings General charges your ad rate (2% to 100%) on the total sale amount, including shipping and sales tax. Keep it apart from other ad spend.
What fees does eBay charge?
eBay’s final value fee includes payment processing, so the default has no additional gateway charge. Its basis includes buyer-paid shipping and sales tax. Enter tax even though it is not retained seller revenue, or the fee estimate will be too low.
| Fee line | Starting preset | Basis and scope | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final value fee | 13.6% | Non-Store category rates. Tax and buyer-paid shipping included. Supported marginal tiers are calculated automatically. | eBay selling fees |
| Per-order fee | $0.30 up to $10.00, $0.40 above | $0.30 for orders of $10 or less; $0.40 above $10. Automatically changes with order total including tax. | eBay selling fees |
| Promoted Listings General charge | 2% (off initially) | Illustrative 2% ad rate, disabled initially (eBay lets you choose 2% to 100%). Charged on the total sale amount including shipping and sales tax, when an item sells within 30 days of a click. Enter your actual rate; do not also count it as ad spend. | eBay Promoted Listings General campaign |
The supported categories apply their headline percentage to the first $7,500 and 2.35% above that amount. This is a marginal tier: the lower rate applies only to the excess. Changing the percentage manually switches to a custom flat-rate estimate.
Store subscriptions, jewellery, watches, handbags, sneakers, motors and other exceptions need their own schedule. Use the official category table rather than treating “most categories” as universal. Allocate insertion fees, optional upgrades and any subscription through overhead.
Fees last checked 15 October 2026. Next review due 15 January 2027. Fees change: presets are US examples, so edit them to match your account.
eBay worked example
An $80 used accessory has a $30 purchase cost, $6 buyer-paid delivery and a $7 shipping label. The most-categories preset models a non-Store seller. The Promoted Listings General charge starts disabled; the $5 ad budget represents separate advertising such as a Priority (cost-per-click) campaign.
Illustrative data. Starting calculator values, one item per order.
- Order revenue before returns
- $80.00 + $6.00 = $86.00
- Final value fee
- $11.70
- Per-order fee
- $0.40
- Promoted Listings General charge
- $0.00
- Total fees
- $12.10
- Retained revenue
- $86.00 × (1 − 0%) = $86.00
- Contribution before ads
- $86.00 − $30.00 COGS − $7.00 delivery − $12.10 fees − $0.00 overhead − $0.00 return handling = $36.90
- Profit after ads
- $36.90 − $5.00 = $31.90
- Profit margin
- $31.90 ÷ $86.00 = 37.1%
- Net markup on COGS
- $31.90 ÷ $30.00 = 106.3%
- Max break-even ad spend
- $36.90
- Break-even ROAS
- $86.00 ÷ $36.90 = 2.33
- Target ROAS for 15% retained margin
- 358%
At $80.00 you keep $31.90 per sale (37.1% margin). You can spend at most $36.90 on ads per order before losing money (break-even ROAS 2.33).
What ROAS does a promoted listing rate need on eBay?
Promoted Listings General charges your ad rate on the total sale amount, which eBay defines as item price, shipping, taxes and any other applicable fees. ROAS in this calculator uses the $86.00 of item and shipping revenue, without tax. So ROAS = $86.00 ÷ the promoted listing charge. The shortcut 100 ÷ rate is only right when there is no sales tax and no shipping charged.
| Ad rate | Charge with no sales tax | ROAS with no sales tax | Charge with $6.88 sales tax | ROAS with $6.88 sales tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2% | $1.72 | 50 | $1.86 | 46.24 |
| 5% | $4.30 | 20 | $4.64 | 18.53 |
| 10% | $8.60 | 10 | $9.29 | 9.26 |
Illustrative data: $86.00 of item and shipping revenue, and an illustrative 8% sales tax of $6.88. These ROAS values cover only the promoted listing charge. Enter the same tax and any other advertising costs in the calculator above before judging the complete order against break-even.
Mistakes to avoid when calculating eBay profit
| Mistake | What it does to profit | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Adding a card processing fee | The final value fee already includes processing, so profit comes out too low. | Leave payment processing out. |
| Calculating the fee on the item price only | Tax and buyer-paid shipping are part of the basis, so the fee comes out too low. | Enter sales tax and shipping charged. |
| Using the most-categories rate for jewellery, watches or sneakers | Those categories have their own schedules, and Store plans change the rates. | Choose the custom flat rate and copy the rate from eBay’s fee table. |
ROAS, POAS and eBay fees
On eBay the fee is calculated on more than the item price, and Promoted Listings General adds a further percentage of the total sale amount. Two listings with the same ROAS can leave very different profit. POAS divides contribution before ads by ad spend: a POAS of 1 covers the ads and leaves nothing over.
How this calculator works
US dollars, one item per order. Selling price and shipping charged exclude sales tax. Tax only increases the basis of fee lines marked payment; it never becomes seller revenue. Fee lines are rounded half up to whole cents before summing. All fee presets are editable estimates, not a settlement quote.
Retained revenue = (selling price + shipping charged) × (1 − returns % − chargebacks %). The returns scenario retains all original COGS, fees and outbound shipping, and adds handling cost × returns %. It assumes no recovered stock value and no refunded fees, unless a page lets you enter a supplier recovery share. Use zero returns for the ordinary completed-order calculation.
Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − total fees − overhead − return handling − ads. Profit margin = profit ÷ retained revenue. Net markup = profit ÷ item COGS. This is profit after entered costs, before unallocated business costs and income taxes.
Maximum break-even ad spend = contribution before ads. Break-even ROAS = original item and shipping revenue ÷ contribution before ads, shown as a plain number. Target ROAS = original revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), shown as a percentage. A zero or negative budget has no feasible ROAS. Pre-return advertising revenue sets the ROAS basis and retained revenue sets the margin basis: match the revenue basis to your advertising reports.
Pages with extra inputs add them to the same sum. Monthly costs are divided by orders per month and added to overhead. Supplier recovery adds back that share of the item cost on returned orders. A chargeback removes the sale, adds the dispute fee and recovers nothing.
- Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − fees − overhead − return handling − ads.
- Break-even ROAS = order revenue ÷ contribution before ads, as a plain number.
- Target ROAS = order revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), as a percentage.
Starting values on this page: selling price $80.00, shipping charged $6.00, sales tax $0.00; item cost $30.00, shipping cost $7.00, overhead $0.00 per order, ad spend $5.00 per order; 0% of orders returned with $0.00 handling each; final value fee: 13.6% on item price, shipping charged and sales tax, then 2.35% above $7,500.00, presets 13.6%, 15.3%, 13.25%; per-order fee: $0.30 up to $10.00, $0.40 above; Promoted Listings General charge: 2% on item price, shipping charged and sales tax, off by default; desired profit margin 15%.
Not modelled: Store subscriptions, insertion fees beyond your free listings, jewellery, watches, handbags, sneakers and other category exceptions, and international fees.
