US dollars, one item per order. Selling price and shipping charged exclude sales tax. Tax only increases the basis of fee lines marked payment; it never becomes seller revenue. Key takeaways
Walmart profit per order = retained revenue − item cost − shipping cost − referral fee − WFS fulfilment fee − WFS add-ons and storage allocation − overhead − return handling − ad spend. Retained revenue is item price plus shipping charged, reduced by the expected refund rate; sales tax is not revenue and is not in any fee base here. Starting values: referral fee: 15% on item price and shipping charged, presets 15%, 12%, 8%; WFS fulfilment fee: $3.45, presets $3.45, $4.95, $5.45, $0.00; WFS add-ons and storage allocation: your amount (starts at $0.00); ad spend $7.00 per order; overhead $0.00 per order; no returns assumed.
- Referral fee presets are 15% for Home, Kitchen, Decor and Garden, 12% for Industrial and Scientific and 8% for Video Game Consoles.
- WFS base fees are $3.45 up to 1 lb, $4.95 at 2 lb and $5.45 at 3 lb. Storage and surcharges are extra.
- Walmart lists no setup or monthly marketplace fee, so your overhead is your own tools and staff.
- Choose seller fulfilled to remove the WFS fee, then enter your own shipping cost.
What fees does Walmart charge?
Walmart’s referral rate depends on category; the Home, Kitchen, Decor and Garden preset uses 15%. WFS is an additional fulfilment service, so selecting it does not replace the referral charge. The supported category list intentionally avoids pretending one rate covers every product.
| Fee line | Starting preset | Basis and scope | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Referral fee | 15% | Home, Kitchen, Decor and Garden example. Choose a supported category or enter your own rate. | Walmart Marketplace pricing |
| WFS fulfilment | $3.45 | Standard shipping weight up to 1 lb: $3.45 before applicable add-ons. Verify dimension rules and shipping weight. | Walmart Fulfillment Services pricing |
| WFS add-ons and storage allocation | Your amount (starts at $0.00) | Enter applicable low-price, apparel, hazardous-material, oversize and storage costs; not included in the base preset. | Walmart Fulfillment Services pricing |
Standard WFS base examples are $3.45 up to 1 lb, $4.95 at 2 lb and $5.45 at 3 lb shipping weight. Dimensions, billable weight and add-ons can change the bill. Use the editable add-ons field for applicable surcharges and allocated storage.
Seller fulfilment and WFS should be compared as separate scenarios. Choose seller fulfilled to remove the WFS base fee, then enter outbound shipping cost. Marketplace referral fees remain in either scenario; monthly business overhead remains your responsibility even without a marketplace subscription.

Walmart worked example
A $55 Home and Kitchen product costs $21 and uses the up-to-1-lb standard WFS base fee. The example sets add-ons and storage to zero and spends $7 on ads. It is valid only for a product with no additional fulfilment charges.
Illustrative data. Starting calculator values, one item per order.
- Order revenue before returns
- $55.00 + $0.00 = $55.00
- Referral fee
- $8.25
- WFS fulfilment
- $3.45
- WFS add-ons and storage allocation
- $0.00
- Total fees
- $11.70
- Retained revenue
- $55.00 × (1 − 0%) = $55.00
- Contribution before ads
- $55.00 − $21.00 COGS − $0.00 delivery − $11.70 fees − $0.00 overhead − $0.00 return handling = $22.30
- Profit after ads
- $22.30 − $7.00 = $15.30
- Profit margin
- $15.30 ÷ $55.00 = 27.8%
- Net markup on COGS
- $15.30 ÷ $21.00 = 72.9%
- Max break-even ad spend
- $22.30
- Break-even ROAS
- $55.00 ÷ $22.30 = 2.47
- Target ROAS for 15% retained margin

Mistakes to avoid when calculating Walmart profit
| Mistake | What it does to profit | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Treating $3.45 as the full fulfilment cost | It is the base fee for an item up to 1 lb. Storage and surcharges come on top. | Enter extra WFS charges in the add-ons line. |
| Dropping the referral fee when you use WFS | WFS is a fulfilment service. The referral fee still applies. | Keep both lines on. |
| Using the Home and Kitchen rate for every product | Rates differ by category, so profit is wrong for the others. | Pick your category or enter your own percentage. |
ROAS, POAS and Walmart fees
Walmart takes a category percentage and WFS adds a fixed fee by weight, so the same ROAS leaves different profit on a light, high-priced item than on a heavy, low-priced one. POAS divides contribution before ads by ad spend: a POAS of 1 covers the ads and leaves nothing over.
How this calculator works
US dollars, one item per order. Selling price and shipping charged exclude sales tax. Tax only increases the basis of fee lines marked payment; it never becomes seller revenue. Fee lines are rounded half up to whole cents before summing. All fee presets are editable estimates, not a settlement quote.
Retained revenue = (selling price + shipping charged) × (1 − returns % − chargebacks %). The returns scenario retains all original COGS, fees and outbound shipping, and adds handling cost × returns %. It assumes no recovered stock value and no refunded fees, unless a page lets you enter a supplier recovery share. Use zero returns for the ordinary completed-order calculation.
Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − total fees − overhead − return handling − ads. Profit margin = profit ÷ retained revenue. Net markup = profit ÷ item COGS. This is profit after entered costs, before unallocated business costs and income taxes.
Maximum break-even ad spend = contribution before ads. Break-even ROAS = original item and shipping revenue ÷ contribution before ads, shown as a plain number. Target ROAS = original revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), shown as a percentage. A zero or negative budget has no feasible ROAS. Pre-return advertising revenue sets the ROAS basis and retained revenue sets the margin basis: match the revenue basis to your advertising reports.
Pages with extra inputs add them to the same sum. Monthly costs are divided by orders per month and added to overhead. Supplier recovery adds back that share of the item cost on returned orders. A chargeback removes the sale, adds the dispute fee and recovers nothing.
- Profit = retained revenue − COGS − shipping cost − fees − overhead − return handling − ads.
- Break-even ROAS = order revenue ÷ contribution before ads, as a plain number.
- Target ROAS = order revenue ÷ (contribution before ads − retained revenue × desired margin), as a percentage.
Starting values on this page: selling price $55.00, shipping charged $0.00, sales tax $0.00; item cost $21.00, shipping cost $0.00, overhead $0.00 per order, ad spend $7.00 per order; 0% of orders returned with $0.00 handling each; referral fee: 15% on item price and shipping charged, presets 15%, 12%, 8%; WFS fulfilment fee: $3.45, presets $3.45, $4.95, $5.45, $0.00; WFS add-ons and storage allocation: your amount (starts at $0.00); desired profit margin 15%.
Not modelled: WFS bands above 3 lb, oversize and dimension rules, storage charges, returns processing and promotional programmes.
